GRUPORAGA,S.A. has proven experience in the design, construction, and operation of treatment plants for urban waste, plant waste, and sewage sludge, drinking-water treatment plant sludge, and construction and demolition sludge, etc. It is currently running the sewage-sludge and vegetable-waste treatment plant at Villanueva de la Cañada, near Madrid. This plant, with a treatment capacity of 30,000 tonnes/year will be managed in Temporary Companies Union (UTE) by GRUPORAGA,S.A. for the next 4 years. The company is also running and maintaining the Waste Recycling Pointcentre of Boadilla del Monte in the Community of Madrid for a period of 10 years. These facilities manage a wide variety of wastes, including hazardous waste.
With regard to sewage sludge,

is strongly committed to the sector for sludge treatment and recovery, now known
as biosolids in international literature. Transport of the sludge from the Water Purification Plants to the sludge treatment plants or agricultural areas for direct use. Direct application of the sludge in agriculture and/or treatment and conversion into organic fertiliser for agricultural, forestry, or gardening use. Quality control of the end products and the treatment processes obtained. The marketing of these end products and the development of services for application of these for agricultural purposes. Management of these contracts has led to the establishment and consolidation of a wider working range of GRUPORAGA,S.A. in this sector, as with the completion of all kinds of advisory projects and studies related with sewage sludge. AGRICULTURAL APPLICATION OF PURIFICATION PLANT BIOSOLIDS One of our activities in the waste sector is the agricultural recycling of sewage sludge. The company has been taken on as a marketer of sludge in the community of Madrid and manages the removal, transport, and distribution of biosolids that meet the requirements stated by legislation for their use in agriculture. These by-products of the food industry, the paper industry, and water-purification plants have value as a fertiliser given their high content in organic materials. The organic material in biosolids provides humus, which improves the structure of the soil and helps to release the blocked mineral nutrients. It stimulates the bacterial activity in the soils and increases its fertility. It also contributes to improved water retention in the soil. The biosolid is used especially as an organic conditioner of rain-fed crops and in winter cereals to improve the soil conditions and provide nutrients. The time of application is about two or three months before sowing. It is also advisable to apply it to land not being cultivated during the current year (fallow) to give it time to mature and time for the product to decompose in the soil. GRUPORAGA,S.A. is responsible for sampling the soil and its corresponding analysis as required in Decree 193/1998 of 20 November of the Community of Madrid. TRANSPORT, COLLECTION, AND DISTRIBUTION The product is transported by tractors with bath-type tipping trailers. These vehicles deposit the product on the corresponding plot, in an orderly fashion, in rows, at the required amount. It can also be deposited in a nearby stockpile or waste land for subsequent laying over the appropriate plot. It is distributed by a dung spreader trailer and a shovel loader. The product is applied to the entire arable layer of the soil and must be subsequently buried to promote humification and mineralisation. GRUPORAGA,S.A. draws up a final report for the client in which it details the amounts used, the organic material applied, the fertilising units used in the soil, and a multi-annual application plan.
